Service · Demand Generation
LinkedIn Ads for complex products.
In technical B2B, LinkedIn is the channel on which an entire buying committee can be reached in a targeted way. That tempts companies to treat it as a lead channel, and that is exactly where many campaigns fail.
In short
In technical B2B, LinkedIn Ads are best suited to building demand and covering the entire buying committee. Audiences are defined by company size, industry, job function or account lists. A sensible media budget starts at around €2,000 per month for at least six months.
Definition
A buying committee is the group of people involved in an investment decision, typically four to seven: users, technical reviewers, procurement, management and often someone sceptical of the project. Campaigns that reach only one of these roles rarely lead to a decision.
01 · Starting point
Why lead forms optimise the wrong metric in long buying cycles.
A LinkedIn lead form can be completed in two clicks. That is precisely the problem.
Offer a white paper with pre-filled fields and you get many addresses from people who wanted a PDF. It looks good in the report. Sales gets little out of it, and after three months the channel is declared unsuitable.
Search reaches people with an acute need. LinkedIn reaches people regardless of need, and most of them have none right now. The value of the channel lies in being present for months until the need arises.
Campaigns built this way look weaker in the short term and perform much better in the medium term. The proof comes when enquiries are tracked in the CRM through to the order.
What LinkedIn Ads are good for
- Building demand among companies without an acute need
- Covering every role in the buying committee
- Account-based marketing with target account lists
- Supporting ongoing sales processes
- Recruiting technical specialists
- Visibility before trade fairs and industry events
02 · Structure
What a B2B LinkedIn campaign structure looks like.
| Stage | Goal | Format | Target metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Awareness in the target segment | Video, thought leader ads | Reach in the target group, video completion rate |
| Consideration | Engagement with the subject | Document ads, articles without forms | Website visits from target accounts, returning visitors |
| Enquiry | Conversation or concrete enquiry | Single image with a clear offer, retargeting | Qualified conversations, proposals triggered |
Budget split is typically around 40, 35 and 25 percent. Booking only the third stage means competing for the few companies with an acute need.
Audience definition: what works
- Company size and industry
- The most reliable criteria, for example manufacturing companies with 200 to 1,000 employees in the DACH region.
- Job function and seniority
- Also useful, although job titles in the Mittelstand are inconsistent.
- Target account lists
- The most precise option if a target customer list exists. It is the basis for account-based marketing.
- Interests and groups
- Unreliable. Self-reported information hardly reflects actual need.
